My Morning Routine

A few years ago, I came across a Forbes article describing the morning routines of some of the top female leaders in the world. I anticipated reading about each woman’s morning meditation practice, done while detoxing with green tea and a charcoal face mask. However, I was surprised to find that this was not the case. These powerhouse women in fact spent their mornings doing very ‘average’ things; taking the dog for a walk, drinking a cup of coffee while glancing at the newspaper, and making breakfast for their kids. They did however, share the practices of rising early, and getting their day started with physical movement.

Since reading the Forbes article, I’ve noticed the trending of morning routines.  One of my favorite podcasters, Tim Ferris, often asks of his guest’s morning routines. In her book, Better than Before, author Gretchen Rubin writes of the value in morning routines for maintaining good habits.

Unintentionally, I’ve been developing my own morning routine over the past year. What has now become intentional though, are my efforts to maintain my routine. I recognize the effect that each small aspect has on the rest of my day. So whether I need to wake-up 30 minutes earlier or adjust to a new environment, I will do these things, so that my routine is protected.

Here’s what I like to do-

  1. Wake-up
  2. Enjoy a cup of coffee with heavy cream (set-up the night prior to brew at 5:30am)
  3. Write down three things I am grateful for in my gratitude journal. Today’s entry included “my good healthy, I woke up with my husband laying next to me, and it’s Saturday.”
  4. 30-60 minutes of physical activity- this lately has been yoga class or a 30-min run outdoors
  5. Shower, change and get ready for work if a week day

Simple yet satisfying. With my routine complete, I’m ready to take on the day.

Does anyone else follow a morning routine? I’d love to learn more, so please do share!
